A modern songwriter inspired by the swampy grit, juke-joint swagger and countrified twang of old-school American roots music. It’s a sound anchored by a genuine reverence for the good stuff — including Texas electric blues, Memphis soul, New Orleans voodoo funk, the Tulsa groove and Mississippi Delta blues — and updated to suit the unique experience of a storyteller, multi-instrumentalist, wandering troubadour and larger-than-life frontman who’s lived everywhere from the Bible Belt to the Mexican Baja. They call him King Corduroy aka The Cosmic Troubadour of Southern Soul.
Praised by Rolling Stone as fusing “Motown’s funky stomp with the Rolling Stones’ greasy, horn-laden rock,” the album is an infectious slice of vintage gold that draws on soul, pop, rock, and blues, a retro-tinged collection fueled by larger-than-life horns, cinematic strings, and wall-of-sound production that tips its cap to George Martin and Phil Spector. Where the studio versions of Redstone’s tunes are compact and tightly wound, the stage versions can unfurl into extended musical expressions, the multi-instrumentalist and his band treating the album as a jumping off point for searing, soulful, sonic improvisations.
Kiely’s songs walk a tightrope, planting each step equally with both the grace at the heart of folk music, and the steadfast confidence of an experienced rock and roll soul.
